Choosing What to Protect with Peace of Mind Organizing

What_To_Protect

It can be hard to think about the worst happening to the most precious items you own.

If your home caught on fire, what would you grab? It might be your kids, your purse, your pets (or all of the above). But what about your precious photos? The love letters your grandparents wrote one another that you inherited? The first tooth your child lost?

What if you weren’t home when the fire began?

There are many items that we would be devastated to lose in a fire or other calamity and it’s not feasible to think we can grab them as we evacuate our home. That’s where a fire-proof safe or storage box comes into play. If those precious items are stored in a safe place within your home, you’ll have easy access to them when you need them (unlike a safe deposit box at a bank) and you can have the peace of mind of knowing that they’re protected if the worst should happen.

So how do you decide what to store in a protected environment?

There are several categories of items that might best be stored in a fireproof safe or storage box:

  • Truly irreplaceable and important items, like inherited items, handmade items, genealogy papers and family histories. (Or backup disks of genealogy documents that are stored electronically.) Irreplaceable childhood keepsakes (a baptismal gown or a tooth for example) or items that represent major milestones (the medal from your first marathon) fit into this category.
  • Documents that you want easy access to or would be troublesome to replace, like passports, birth certificates, vehicle titles and original social security cards
  • Items you would need immediately after a fire, like insurance documents and medications lists
  • Valuables, like jewelry, a coin collection, and cash. (Leave out your pearls, though; they’re extremely temperature sensitive and can be damaged at lower temperatures, so a fire-proof safe might not protect them.)
  • Information that would help your heirs with your estate after you pass away or if you fall ill, like your will, power of attorney, and health care directives. You can also have a notebook with account numbers and passwords, along with other pertinent information. I have filled out the Exit Strategies workbook with my elderly parents and take great comfort in knowing that their financial life and their final wishes are documented. A fire-proof safe in my parents’ home is a perfect place for that workbook—assuming I have the combination.

Though a fire-proof safe or storage box can keep your important and irreplaceable items safe from fire, you want to store your items safely within the safe. Use archival, acid-free storage boxes for those delicate documents (those love letters, old photos or family histories) before storing in a safe. Place a desiccant packet in the safe to help keep items safe from humidity.

To Have and Hold On To

Blog_ToHaveAndToHold

It was such a cliché.  We met at a bar.  And I’m so glad we did, because this year I celebrated my one year anniversary with my husband Bill.  It was a perfect day, and I married my best friend.  No matter what happens in our future, I know I’ll always be thankful for that happy day and the wonderful year that has followed.  We got a puppy, painted our kitchen, landscaped our yard and made some wonderful memories along the way.  Memories I know 20 years from now I’ll want to look back on; so I’m keeping them safe in a Waterproof Fire-resistant File to share with our family as it ages and grows for years to come.

So what have I put in my file?  Here’s just a couple of little things I’m keeping safe.

The Cake Topper from Our Wedding-  It may sound cheesy, but I really love these little birds that topped our wedding.  It was such a beautiful, fun day and this little item reminds me of the sunshine and laughter that encompassed it!

The CD of Photo’s from Our Wedding-  We wanted to capture all the special moments of our big day, so we had a photo album made.  I love sharing it with everyone so it’s always out, but I keep an extra copy on a CD in our safe. That way if anything ever happens, I know our photos and memories are protected.

Important Documents- It’s not exciting but it is nice to know that our marriage certificate is safe and on hand when I need it.  I also put my old driver’s license and social security card in there.  I could have shredded these I guess, but it didn’t feel right to throw them out.  They may be the last things with my old name on them,

Our Puppy’s First Collar- Brandi isn’t just our dog, she’s a special member of our family.  In the last six months, she’s also gone from just 10 lbs of cuddles to 76 lbs of crazy! She outgrew her collar in what seemed like moments, but I kept this little memento as a reminder of the little bundle that rode home on my lap.

I know I’ll have lots more to add as the years go on, but these little tokens are just some of things I hold close to my heart and keep inside my safe.

What do you keep safe?

SentrySafe offers a wide variety products to keep your important items protected from fire, flood and theft.  It’s a place to keep important documents, valuable memories and keepsakes protected and organized.  And even though I work here, I recently had a personal reminder of what that meant.  Two weeks away from our wedding, my fiancé and I were tearing apart the house looking for his birth certificate.  We recently purchased our home safe, but hadn’t quite gotten it out of the box yet.  It was a crazy moment, and we feared we wouldn’t be able to get a marriage license in time for our wedding.  Thankfully we found it!   As soon as it was discovered hidden under a depth of unimportant papers, I knew exactly where to put it next.  Now our Fire-Resistant Safe is full with important documents and photos!

But it got me thinking, what do my fellow employees keep safe?

“I started working at Sentry in August of 1985 in Customer Service, I quickly learned the value of Sentry safes with the testimonial letters and photos we would receive. I think to me among the most precious items that I store in my Sentry safe are our wedding photos proof book, the negatives from the photos through the years and most recently a digital copy of our photos.”  -Ellie Kelly, Sales Administration Manager

“I keep our wedding videos, and the photos of the birth of our 2 boys in our safe at home.  In the end everything is replaceable except our past’s most important memories..” – Anthony DeSalvo, Web Development Manager

“Art has been a lifelong passion of mine and I always have a little sketchbook with me. Over time I have filled several books with sketches of the places I have been and people I have met. They have become as much journals as sketchbooks with each drawing reminding me of a moment in time. I would hate for anything to happen to them so i keep them in a Guardian storage box.”  Josh Coon, Senior Brand Manager

“I would want to store my children’s pictures and my memory box in a SentrySafe.  My memory box contains special pictures of my father and Michael Jackson memorabilia.  Both MJ and my father died within three months of each other and it would mean a great deal to me if these items were preserved.”  -Veronica Dasher, Customer Service Supervisor

“One thing I would want to keep protected in my safe would be all of my son’s artwork.  His time, hard work and effort to create this art, in addition to all my important documents, are priceless to me.” –Joanne Straub, Marketing Production Manager
