Robert Siciliano: 10 Things to keep in your Big Bolts Fire-Safe

Your house isn’t going to catch on fire, right? Well, you hope not, so maybe you even fool yourself into believing it can’t happen. But I’ll bet you have fire insurance, and maybe a collapsible escape ladder, and a fire extinguisher or two. I have all this, and I also back up all my digital data in the cloud, including pictures and documents.

And I have a fire-resistant safe.

All this preparation is so that if there ever is a fire, I can reduce or eliminate any risks to lives and valuables.
Most documentation is replaceable, but certain things are not. Sometimes, when documentation is replaceable, getting duplicates can be a nightmare.

Mementos: Photos, love letters, children’s drawings, and so on. You probably have a box full of things that you like to browse through every ten years or so. Or photo albums on a shelf. If these items were incinerated, you’d be very unhappy.

Insurance papers: Home, auto, life, health, and business insurance papers should be protected.

Health related information: if you have health issues and multiple files, records, and prescriptions, they should be protected.

Financials: Documentation regarding investments, bank account numbers, stocks, bonds and coins should be protected.

Wallet: Photocopy everything in your wallet front and back and put the copy and extra credit cards and cash should be protected.

Identification: Birth certificates, passports, driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, insurance cards, and any other identifying documents should be protected.

Titles: Deeds, boat, and automobile titles should be protected.

Wills: Any and all documentation related to a will should be protected.

Jewelry: Most insurance providers require a safe in order to obtain insurance coverage.

Extras: I have an extra passport, extra credit cards, extras set of keys, extra emergency cash, and extra identification, all protected in my safe.

ME911: Are You Prepared ‘Digitally’ For Life’s Uncertainties?

We plan for meetings, dinner meals, family gatherings and more. So why is that we drop the ball when it comes to planning and preparing our families for an emergency?

Is it because we think planning for the unexpected involves a lot a work or are we in the – “it will never happen to us” mode?

During the last week of August, Hurricane Irene stormed through the East Coast coupled with an earthquake causing significant damage not just to people’s homes but also emotionally. In fact when the storm hit, several people took to modern day technologies to connect with loved ones through social media and even found shelters in affected areas through apps on their phone.

Given everything that’s happened, one thing’s for sure, the time you spend planning is crucial as it helps you save time in dealing with life’s uncertainties. From making sure your insurance is up to date to ensuring that your vital documents and personal items are stored safely, being prepared helps you get back on your feet faster.

Why all the ‘planning’ talk you ask?

Well September is ‘National Preparedness Month’ making this the perfect time for us to help you get started on steps you can take to be ready in case of an emergency.

ME911 and Family Safety

With families of our own to protect at ME911, we’re on a mission to help parents protect their loved ones by quickly tackling all sorts of emergencies. With smart phones so easily accessible today, we wanted to help put family safety and security at your fingertips.

How? With an app – our ME911 Safety App. Yes, you guessed it, there’s an app for that!

Whether it’s losing your wallet and needing copies of IDs or cards or even having to provide first responders with access to your loved one’s vital information – our app’s got your back. Although you may have the information stored in several places, ME911’s one-touch access to it all helps save time so you can (and here’s the phrase again) get back on your feet faster.

How can it help me?

Emergency Profiles

You can fill out profiles with descriptive details like age, distinguishing marks, height, weight and a photo. Why? In the unfortunate event that a child gets separated from his or her parents, providing a detailed description to authorities in a state of panic might be difficult. Having an emergency profile readily available on your phone could help save time.

You can also store important health information like allergies, a medical condition, insurance details and more which could help first responders effectively treat your loved ones.

Virtual Locker

As our family grows so does our collection of vital paperwork and information such as certificates, insurance information, membership cards etc. Take a quick peek into your SentrySafe or even your wallet. Hmm… if you’re still rummaging through kitchen drawers looking for your stuff might we suggest a Fire-Safe?

Now that your originals are safely tucked away, how about digital copies? Especially for those times you’re on the road due to an evacuation wishing you had access to your vital paperwork stashed at home. With ME911’s Virtual Locker you can snap a quick picture on your phone or even scan and save it all to your online account. This makes it easy to access with your secure PIN at the tap of a button.

Virtual Assistant

We could all use an extra hand in an emergency. Let’s assume you’re at an international airport but for some reason your passport isn’t. Now what? With ME911 you can call your 24/7 Virtual Assistant to email or fax documents stored in your locker. Which means it’s time to call in and have the passport copy you stored in your Virtual Locker faxed over to the authorities to help in the process of identifying your citizenship.

It also includes an emergency alert system with which you can send text messages alerts to your loved ones with a GPS link automatically attached. This link pinpoints your current location in Google Maps, so they can reach out knowing exactly where you are.

Passwords

Have you noticed how many usernames, passwords and answers to ‘what’s your pet’s favorite movie’ we have to remember for all of our online accounts? You can now skip the hassle of having to remember or being forced to reset your details by saving that long list of accounts, passwords, usernames, PIN numbers, security codes and more safely in your password vault for quick access.

Safe and Secure

The information you store is private and only accessible with your PIN#. Once you install the app and set-up your account you also get a web account at www.ME911.com with the same sign-in details. So if you ever lose your phone you can always retrieve your information securely from ME911.com.

To sum it all up, time is of the essence in an emergency. The time you spend preparing now could save you a lifetime of “I wish I had…” later.
